“The water puppet show is a must-see in Hanoi I was told, but it was still with some reservations that I sat down for what I expected to be a children’s production in Vietnamese. Within a few minutes however I was laughing and clapping with the rest of the, mainly adult, audience. The wooden puppets are operated by rods hidden within a base of water, so settings like rivers and paddyfields are common. They splash about depicting rural parables like the tale of a fox outwitting a farmer and it’s easy to understand the action. In the lobby afterwards, some of the beautifully-made puppets were for sale. They were a bit pricey though, so I headed for the nearby shopping streets instead, touring by cyclo first to get a bearing on how rows of shops selling silk, laquerware and more are handily grouped together by theme.”
