Maldives heads to the mid-market

THE Maldives is working to shed its reputation as being suited only to top-end tourists with the development of an extensive integrated resort of smaller mid- market hotels.

Set across 40 hectares of Thumburi

and

islands, Thumburi resort will actively

encourage small and

medium-sized businesses to get involved in associated tourism activities and will include three 100-room beach hotels with water villas, and a selection of 25-50-room boutique hotels.

It

will also include restaurants, spas, bars and swimming pools. The resort is due to open in 2016 and will help the Maldives increase tourist arrivals by 150,000 by 2017. The UK is its fifth biggest market to the Maldives and is expected to respond well to the mid-market accommodation. Visitmaldives.com

Oman takes a more sustainable approach

OMAN has seen its UK visitor numbers grow from 25,000 (2003) to 133,529 (2013) and is looking for growth of between 14% and 18% in the future, according to Her Excellency Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of Oman’s Ministry of Tourism. However, she added, sustainable

tourism remains the country’s focus, along with ‘quality of tourist’. “Our diversity gives us an edge. We

have 11 regions, each with a unique feel. Our main USPs are culture, heritage and the authentic Arabian experience. We’re also a safe country”. omantourism.gov.com
