underground car park (to our surprise free for guests), we checked in and headed for our rooms which, although standard, still qualifi ed for the word palatial. It’s a huge hotel but undoubtedly one of the best in Vegas and worth the extra cost.
A taste of Vegas
The city offers so much but even a couple of days allows time to sample many of its attractions. From the fantastic fountains outside the Bellagio to an amazing performance of Cirque du Soleil’s newest show, Zarkana, lounging by the hotel’s heated outdoor pool, an occasional fl utter, sampling the other iconic hotels, shopping and of course dining, there’s just so much to do. Our two standout evenings included cocktails in the new Franklin bar and dinner in miX restaurant, with its fabulous views of the Strip, both in the Delano (
delanolasvegas.com) and dinner in MGM Resorts’ Mirage in the Heritage Steak restaurant (
mirage.com). And then it was time to head for San Diego, stopping off in Primm for breakfast pancakes and a little incredulity at the punters playing the slots while outside was the most beautiful Saturday morning imaginable. But then I guess Nevadans are used to it!
It was a long drive to San Diego but so well worth it to spend time in this delightful Californian city. We checked into the Kimpton Solamar in the city’s exciting Gaslamp Quarter packed full of bars, restaurants and an eclectic mix of shops. As well as being in the Gaslamp the Solamar is also no more than 10 minutes’ stroll to the delightful waterfront where we hired bikes to see the hundreds of boats and ships along the waterfront, including the USS Midway aircrcaft carrier and Maritime Museum, the Bob Hope memorial and the pretty Seaport Village. All too soon our trip was almost over. Just time to head up the freeway, drop off the hire car and wait for our fl ight.
The trip offered a great mix of natural and man-made wonders but next time I’ll allow a little longer to really savour the fl avour.
