The year ahead W
elcome to the winter double edition of Business Franchise magazine and the first of 2015. The next 12
months promise to be huge for budding entrepreneurs, not least because the Franchise Exhibitions return, with the first taking place on 20 and 21 February at NEC Birmingham. With an excellent array of features – including speakers, panels, advisors and franchise opportunities – there’s more than ever before to help you get on your way to running your own business. This year’s five exhibitions take place across the UK – in London, the Midlands and a Manchester venue easily accessed from anywhere in the north – throughout the whole year. The benefits of visiting a Franchise Exhibition and details of what to expect when attending this year’s events are outlined in the 2015 Preview – turn to pages 24 and 25. This past year has seen many debates
taking place around the subject of women at work and in business, equal pay, boardroom quotas, female leadership and ‘leaning in’. The latter phrase was coined by Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer at Facebook, and is the title of her 2014 book on how women can better
thrive in the workplace. On this side of the Atlantic, Karen Brady CBE, brought the powerful presence she has held since her days in the Director’s Box at Birmingham City, first to The Apprentice, then to The House of Lords where she was elevated to Baroness. My female workplace icon, however, is
Coronation Street’s Bet Lynch, landlady of the Rover’s Return who loomed large in my northern, telly-watching childhood as a woman firmly in control of her own business. And who else could pull off wearing head-to-toe leopard skin? Back in the real world, however, Business Franchise magazine contributes to the wider conversation about women in business with a profile of Dina Dwyer-Owens, co-chair of a multi-million dollar company and champion of women in trade services, on pages 18-20. To read real-life case studies of sisters doing it for themselves, turn to the Special Feature on women in franchising on page 34. In the meantime, I am channelling my inner Bet, with a pair of zebra-print mules and a well-chosen withering put-down. A girl can dream…
