Women in Franchising

consider franchise ownership and, in fact, will provide up to a 50 per cent discount for women who team up with a franchisee to learn, not only the trades, but the business side. I am also thrilled to see more of our franchisees actively recruiting women.” Experience working in the service trades is by no means a prerequisite to being a Dwyer Group franchisee. It’s more about finding a match in personal goals and attitude.

Dina says: “The Dwyer Group service brands look for franchisees that fit our corporate culture – our mission, vision and values. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be experienced in the service trades.”

So, the door is wide open for women to join The Dwyer Group – whether as a franchisee or a service professional – and there is clearly an abundance of support available for those that decide to walk through it. The company urges its employees to maintain a good work-life balance, which is particularly encouraging for mothers with young children. As a mother herself, Dina knows the balance between work and family can be difficult to maintain. “One of the greatest investments I have made to help my work-life harmony is to surround myself with a talented team in all aspects of my life. That includes working with my amazing and talented team at The Dwyer Group, the support of my local church, help at home and more. My husband and I are great partners, and we work hard

to make family time a priority. “The Dwyer Group’s mission is to teach our principles and systems of both personal and business success so that all people we touch will live happier, more successful lives. I teach the first class of our franchisee basic training that focuses on the principles and systems of personal success. I spend a good portion of time helping our franchisees think about their wheel of life (financial/career, social, spiritual, family, mental and physical) and recognise where their priorities lie so they can set specific targets to attain a balance.

“I really enjoy helping other people achieve their potential”

“The class is about helping people gain clarity about who they are, what they want to achieve in life and how to find harmony in the process. That’s what I like to call it – harmony. It might not quite feel like balance all of the time, but if you have harmony that usually does the trick. It requires real focus and a lot of planning and prioritising. I absolutely love teaching the class because it forces me to look at myself too; I am always reminded to review my wheel of life and make adjustments. So, it’s a never-ending process. “The beautiful thing about being a

franchisee is you have the freedom to create the ideal schedule. The reality is when a franchise is just getting started, there will likely be some challenges with balance and the quicker the franchisee implements the systems, hires and trains the right people, the sooner they can achieve that harmony.” In 2002, Dina was the recipient of the Bonny LeVine award, the International Franchise Association’s highest award for mentoring other women and advancing their careers in franchising. Dina is highly deserving of the award and has the dream that one day women will make up 50 per cent of Dwyer Group frontline workers. She says: “I was honored to receive the Bonnie LeVine award, and I have gladly nominated other women to receive it as well. But regardless of awards, the truth is that I really enjoy helping other people achieve their potential. And I find that women are especially hungry for this type of mentorship.” The Dwyer Group is currently expanding

into Europe with a focus on establishing a firm foundation for the company in the UK market. Dina explains: “The Dwyer Group UK offices are staffed for growth as we direct franchise our Mr. Electric and Aire Serv businesses and as we work closely with our master licensees to expand our brands across the UK and Europe.” If you are a woman looking to invest in a franchise, you really couldn’t wish for a better boss… n
