All aboard for a rail

ontinent-spanning Amtrak (www. amtrak.com) links major cities, small towns and scenic wonderlands in 46 of the 50 states as well as serving the

unique city-state of Washington, DC. At New York City's Grand Central Terminal you

can hop on the Silver Service/Palmetto and end up in Miami, Orlando or Tampa via such Southern charmers as Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia, or on The Cardinal and stop off at Philadelphia, Washington, DC, various Virginia and other cities and end up in Chicago. The Empire Service heads from Manhattan to Niagara Falls via the scenic Hudson Valley and there are numerous options out of Chicago such as The California Zephyr via Glenwood Springs and Denver, Colorado to Emeryville, the station for San Francisco. California is also served by such lines as The Coast Starlight running from Los Angeles up to Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. If speed is important, you can opt for the Acela Express linking Boston with Washington, DC; if

you want to avoid the long drive down the east coast to Florida, you can put your rental or borrowed car on the Auto Train at Lorton, Virginia, and take it off in Sanford, Florida, an easy drive to Orlando's popular theme parks. There are, of course, many ways to combine US rail journeys with independent or group package holidays. For the past 30 years York-based Great Rail Journeys (www.GreatRail.com) has combined flights from London to various gateway cities with rail travel, hotel accommodation and sightseeing excursions. Among its 14 USA rail packages are five new options: the Premium Coast to Coast, Southern States and the Everglades, California’s Parks and Pacific Coast, America’s Great National Parks and New York & Vermont in the Fall.
