PBA Xtra

Winning!: Gene Stus doing what he did often on the PBA50 Tour—winning. He ranks fifth in all-time PBA50 Tour titles with 11. John Handegard owns the most with 14, while Tom Baker, Gary Dickinson and Dale Eagle are tied at 12 apiece. Stus put in 32 years with General Motors while bowling competitively but staying on the sidelines of the regular PBA Tour. “He definitely would have been a strong contender on the kids’ tour,” said Schlegel. “But in those days, most really good bowlers with good jobs and health insurance and retirement packages stayed home with the family. When you have a wife and kids and family, you’ve got to have that stuff.” Stus went on the senior circuit after retiring from GM. Learn says that while Stus’s immediate impact on the PBA50 Tour “surprised some people at first,” those who knew him in his native Detroit area had long known what he was capable of. At the time of his death on Monday, Aug. 18 at age 74 after a longtime battle with a heart condition, Stus was a member of five Halls of Fame— local halls in Detroit and Taylor, Mich., as well as the Michigan state Hall of Fame; and the USBC and PBA Halls of Fame, where he was inducted in 2009 and 2012, respectively.
