PBA Xtra

Showman: Stus was one of the PBA50 Tour’s most charismatic performers whenever he made a TV show. “He was just spectacular, and had some great TV shows to prove it,” said Learn. He became the first senior player to bowl a televised 300 game in 1992, when he defeated Don Gilman, 300-188, in the Pacific Cal Bowl Senior Open in Lakewood, Calif. That one game earned him a total of $110,300, including $100,000- from Brunswick, $10,000 from the PBA, and $300 from the host center. That score stands as the largest margin of victory on TV in PBA50 Tour history. Stus owns several other scoring records, including two years in which he cashed in every PBA50 Tour event he bowled—1993, when he cashed in all 14 events, and in 1997, when he cashed in all 16 events. He also holds records for highest score by the 24th qualifier (4105 in Jackson, Miss., 1994); best match play record (16-2 in St. Charles, Mo., 1991); and most 300s in a season (4, 1994).
