World Cup Turns 50
BOWLING IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS File this one under,
“Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.” When Kelly Kulick won the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open on the streets of downtown Reno, many seemed surprised when the competition was compromised by sand and dirt adhering to the lanes that had been “installed” outside for the stepladder finals telecast. But had they witnessed the finals of the AMF Bowling World Cup 15 years earlier, their surprise would have been replaced by knowing nods. In a setting just as spectacular as Reno’s, the finals of the 1997 Cup took place outdoors in the shadows of the Great Sphinx and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Cairo, Egypt. This fall, the QubicaAMF World Cup celebrates its 50th birthday, and the September issue of Bowlers Journal International features an eight-page retrospective.
