Connected devices in use to watch OTT video: Italy
Connected device report Italy
I
n tandem with this issue’s OTT special report, we continue our coverage of SNL Kagan’s connected device research, which this month focuses on Italy, where only 57.1 per cent of households had broadband in 2013. This compares with 65.0 per cent in Spain, 88.9 per cent in France and 71.9 per cent in Germany. The report details that Italy’s per-capita gross national income purchasing power parity, or GNI PPP, is also much lower than in most of western Europe at $33,379, compared with Germany’s $41,446 and the UK’s $37,433.
“Although these statistics illustrate some of the challenges facing various over-the-top services targeting Italy today, the number of connected devices in use to watch OTT video should see robust growth from almost 23.7 million in 2013 to a little more than 60.1 million in 2018. Additionally, the number of overall connected devices in Italy
should increase from 70.2 million in 2013 to 106.6 million in 2018, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.7 per cent over that period.”
Smartphones According to SNL’s statistics, the majority of smartphones in Italy are currently being used to watch OTT video, mostly short-form user-generated content from sites similar to YouTube. “Small smartphone screens are ill-suited for watching long-form video content, but increasingly, smartphones are being used to discover and launch movies and television episodes on larger television screens using protocols like DIAL and Google Cast,” it reports. “In 2013, the market’s number of smartphones in use to watch OTT video was 15.0 million. By 2018 that number should more than double to 30.6 million. In 2018, the number of total connected smartphones in
Game consoles
The report also reveals that excluding the small but rapidly growing category of streaming media players, video game consoles are the fastest- growing category of connected devices being used to watch OTT video in the country. “From 2013 to 2018, the CAGR of video game consoles used to watch OTT video should be 40.2 per cent, with the number of devices increasing from 1.6 million in 2013 to almost 8.7 million in 2018. This increase comes despite the overall installed base decreasing from 16.0 million in 2013 to 14.5 million in 2018. As new video game consoles propagate through the market and become consumers’ primary streaming media devices, older consoles are often disconnected. Meanwhile, some

Italy succinctly illustrates the tremendous differences in technology adoption and demographics between the northern and southern segments of western Europe, suggests SNL Kagan’s latest connected device report
Italy should climb to 43.1 million from a base of 24.8 million in 2013, a CAGR of 11.7 per cent during the period.”
