“We should not lose sight of delivering the best television viewing experience that uses the available display capabilities,” says Morse. In this regard, Cisco points to the ability to support multiple concurrent HD decodes for services such as sports on UHD displays (such as Mosaics); and consideration of other information that may be relevant to a consumer in supporting their digital life, such as using additional screen real estate for social media, news, weather, or advertising tie-ins. “We need to ensure that television can always be centre stage while augmenting it with additional capabilities,” stresses Morse. “Operators should leverage additional input/control devices

rather than overloading the primary viewing screen with complex navigation schemes.” Nagra runs a division called UEX Studio, staffed by experts in user interface design with a range of skills including graphic and interface designers and application engineers. Their role is to explore how UI design can reduce cost for operators. According to Alex Fishman, Nagra’s director of user experience; “Experience has shown that content now needs to be delivered in a customised way to every user, otherwise it will simply sit there, stale, and users will feel that there is nothing to watch. There is a huge opportunity for service providers to harness their relationships with their customers through a smart interface

and curated services, to get to know them better and to be able to target them with streams of tailored content that is relevant and accessible.” Another challenge is that the same content needs to be displayed on very different devices – from large-screen TV sets down to smartphones – and users will benefit from a common user experience across all these devices. Many existing UIs are unable to offer consistency across different devices, complicating the experience for the user.

Managing the interplay between multiple devices is one of the biggest challenges to tackle, says Nagra. Users who experience inconsistent usage across devices will finally look
