and other solutions that Avid offers for the news production environment.”This part of the upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2014 and will result in improved journalist reporting and the ability to create stories in the field, as well as for those in regional production sites. It will also mean that isolated tape-based production sites that used microwave contribution links for programme exchange will become integrated parts of HRT’s programme production.
Other technologies “With regard to workflow system, Rhozet’s WFS manager combined with Rhozet’s transcoding platform is used to partially automate the media transcoding, editing, validating and transferring process – at this point only for news production,” explains Gvozden.
Chyron Channel Box is used for daily news production, but a new graphics solution will be purchased and installed before the end of the year. Removing tape from the broadcast workflow will be completed by the end of 2014 when expansion and activation of Snell’s
Morpheus four-channel playout automation and media management system is planned. Omneon playout servers will be upgraded with additional decoding cards as well. Although HRT has decided that XDCAM will be adopted as the news production standard, the broadcast format has yet to be determined.
“In order to fulfil our role as a public broadcaster, we needed to create a more productive environment” Goran Gvozden, HRT
Growth of other platforms Gvozden says that it is worth mentioning that Croatia completed the transition to DTT in 2010, with the platform based on the DVB-T technology and MPEG-2 compression technique. Since the analogue switch-off, DTT penetration has been decreasing continuously due to IPTV and the
introduction of cable services. The number of IPTV and cable subscribers is continuously growing, and is taking market share from DTT and satellite. Furthermore, there is a significant growth of OTT services. In the third quarter of 2013 there were nearly 1.4 million broadband internet access subscriptions – which amounts to just over 32 per cent broadband penetration rate. Compared with 2012 the mobile broadband market grew around ten per cent, while fixed increased by five per cent. “If the average number of household members of three is taken into consideration, then the Croatian market has a huge potential for the introduction of additional OTT services. To date, HRT’s free OTT service Gledaj HRT! has gained more than 30,000 users.” With some of the projects implemented, but still many more to come, how does Gvozden sum up the challenges? “There are numerous projects going on simultaneously, so it’s not hard to imagine what resources – human, financial, technical – are necessary to successfully bring this to an end. But we will complete the project on time – and the Croatian viewers will benefit.”
