Diversity of challenges HRT operates seven production studios at the Zagreb facility. Currently, all studio production is based on SD, however, with the investment in 16 new HD studio cameras, video switchers and audio switchers, HRT will be ready for high definition studio production in two studios before the end of this year. Next year, the remaining studios should be equipped with HD equipment, and by the end of 2015 all within the Zagreb facility will be producing programmes in HD. “We made HRT’s channels available in HD on a trial basis only during major sports events such as the Olympic Games, the football World Cup and the Euros. However, the major obstacle to launching our own full HD service is a lack of technological and production resources, shortage of native HD content, as well as an inappropriate existing technical infrastructure.” Although the transition to HD has started, there are other challenges to overcome. “Besides broadcasters and production companies having the capacity to produce the content, the introduction of full HD broadcasting services

in Croatia requires involvement of regulatory bodies, network and service operators, equipment manufacturers, as well as other media organisations. It’s a complex task that should take into consideration specifics with regard to market conditions, availability of frequency spectrum, existing transmission technology, future spectrum demands, and so on.”

Start with newsgathering So far the first investment phase has covered procurement of newsgathering equipment for use in the regional sites. Video journalists are

being equipped with kits based on the JVC GY-HM650 HD mobile newsgathering camera. “VJs were looking for a light, small and easy- to-operate camera capable of simultaneous HiRes and LowRes recording,” states Gvozden. “The crucial advantage is the ability to send the footage via mobile or Wi-Fi connection or provide live streaming directly from the field.” The standard ENG crews will be equipped with Sony PMW-400 and Panasonic AG-HPX600 2/3-type, CMOS, shoulder mount cameras with wireless connectivity. These cameras will improve the quality and accelerate newsgathering and production. At the end of August 2014, reporting from the field was reinforced with the new HD equipped Ka-Sat DSNG vehicle. Gvozden continues, “With the delivery of new VJ, ENG and SNG equipment, a tapeless environment will be introduced gradually. News production at HRT has been centred on an Avid solution since 2003, when the iNews NRCS was installed. Besides the NRCS, the Interplay asset management solution has been installed together with ingest and playout servers, automation control modules
