he internet has opened up possibilities for consumer activism like never before. A protest group can generate support and publicity at the press of a button or touchscreen. The web is home to powerful communities which can
amplify your message to a global audience. So the industry’s approach to operating responsibly, particularly in terms of the environment, has never come under more scrutiny. Which is why the lack of engagement with schemes such as
Abta’s Travelife among online travel agents to date has been so striking, something that this week’s Responsible Travel themed issue shows is changing (page 6). These firms have been quick to grasp how today’s digital world offers incredible opportunities for growth and disruption of established markets. However, this demands no less in terms of responsibilities and they must appreciate the fragile nature of brands operating in the constant glare of public opinion online. The job of taking a leadership role in responsible travel must not be left solely to established players. Online travel companies, competing against them, must recognise they risk a consumer backlash if they ignore sustainable tourism. To understand why this is important for travel, you just have to read this week’s news about proposed greater regulation of the drinks industry. Most consumers don’t consider the impact of alcohol on their health, but a well-organised campaign means the issue is high up on politicians’ agendas. Similarly, many people spare little thought about the
sustainability of their holiday, but an industry that looks like it also doesn’t care can expect far greater scrutiny.
