A fine response Story: Sharp rise in parental fines for school-time holidays Can parents offset any fine, with credits for teacher strike days and term-time teacher training days? l Omnibus
o
I make my staff who take holidays during term time wear a badge of shame – it’s the only way..! l Inrepose
Where’s help, MSC? I cannot believe that MSC Cruises does not supply wheelchair assistance for ‘slow walkers’ embarking on its vessels. I have not come across this before with any other cruise line. Surely it is against EU regulations and discriminates against the slightly infirm? Very disappointed. l John M Spicer, owner, The Spicer Travel Bureau Travel Weekly would welcome a response from MSC Cruises
Age-old issue Story: Martin Randall Travel lifts ban on over-80s What? So now we get to enjoy being slowed down by octogenarians? Brilliant. If it’s unacceptable for Martin Randall to refuse to take over-80s customers, I demand that Saga starts taking teenagers. l Perplexed
AirFastTickets debt Story: AirFastTickets remains confident of deal after Iata terminates agreements It seems they thought they could be the next Expedia, but the reality is if you sell tickets you have to pay for them. In June, AirFastTickets claimed the money was ‘in the bank’; it clearly wasn’t then, and isn’t now. It may be delusion or something worse. l Alan Bowen, legal adviser, Association of Atol Companies
Noises out of joint Story: Gatwick plans revealed in misplaced dossier Where the industry badly needs to be joined up is on noise because that is the issue that is holding progress back. One airport trying to show that another airport’s plans will create much more noise will do two things. First, it will increase public fear of expansion, which is counterproductive in the short term. The other thing it will do is throw more attention on the noise issue, with the ultimate public benefit being a more acceptable development eventually
because whatever is finally approved is more likely to need the very best initiatives on noise. l David Tarsh, managing director, Tarsh Consulting
Aphrodite’s shock
LETTERS OF THE WEEK
Story: Thomson confirms Aphrodite Hills will be a Sensatori property for 2015 I won’t be selling Aphrodite anymore; clients do not want to mix with the Thomson bucket-and-spade brigade – sorry, brutal but honest! How on earth will it work if only the hotel is Sensatori? I can’t see any of the decent tour ops putting them on sale for the villas only. l Bluesky2u
I don’t see what the problem is. The Sensatori product is growing so fast and is a great product, surely it’s good news? IHG, the hotel’s owners, reported a fall in profits, whereas Thomson is outperforming the market. l Guest
OK, for all you travel agents moaning that you will never sell this hotel again: when a customer walks in wanting to spend two weeks at Aphrodite and to part with the best part of around £3,000, I guess you are going to be turning them away? Don’t think so! l Dave
