Going green with rolling stock maintenance


New technologies allow for the superior cleaning and care of carriages using products that are environmentally responsible. Nilufar Hussain of Innu-Science explains.


W


ith more pressure than ever before, considering the environment in all


that we do and the way we dispose of waste water – as set out in the government’s Buying Standards – is crucial. This insists on non- harmful products and practices being used to maintain rolling stock, motivating train operators and their suppliers to fi nd greener alternatives.


The search for technologies that perform as well as their aggressive chemical counterparts is on.


Using microbial, enzyme and alternative actives, it’s now possible to:


• Maintain engines using microbes to remove the dirt that are not classifi ed as hazardous in any way and certifi ed as


environmentally responsible. • Maintain ablution waste tanks using microbes to


biodegrade the human waste into grey water, dramatically reducing the odours and making disposal easier and safer.


• Exterior train wash using microbes and enzymes that carry on cleaning the waste water, allowing for more water recycling and reducing odours in the tanks.


• Interior train cleaning using microbes and enzymes to remove stubborn dirt in porous fl ooring, not lifted by chemical cleaning agents (microbes penetrate porous surfaces much more easily), being a nano-technology.


How do microbes and enzymes clean particularly heavily-soiled areas, such as engines? Microbes are nature’s cleaners; our bodies produce enzymes to break down waste. The right strains of microbes are able to break down mineral oils, clean engines, and other strains are able to break down human waste in ablution tanks.

Network Rail’s head offi ce and 300 other Network Rail sites, as well as St Pancras International. Innu-Science has done well in the aviation sector, being used at London Heathrow Terminal 4 and 5, Gatwick Airport, Glasgow Airport and by British Airways.


Nick Winstone, the UK managing director of Innu-Science, said: “Our biological products for the maintenance of rolling stock and ablution tanks are making waves on the continent, with 10% of rolling stock in Sweden using our products already. Innu-Science also won an award from SNCF in France for ‘most innovative new supplier’ in 2012.


“We have developed a strong national support team in the UK cleaning and hygiene market over the past four years and we now turn our attention to the rail sector.


“We have grown our business exponen- tially on a global ba-


sis by fi nding the right partners in each of the many markets in which we operate, and would like to fi nd the right partners in the UK rail industry to service the train operating companies ef-


fectively.”


Innu-Science was recently awarded a six- year contract with RTL, which manages the underground and bus network in Montreal, Canada. This includes the maintenance of all rolling stock, buses, depots, rail stations and interchanges.


This technology is transforming the way that stations and airports in the UK are cleaned – and will do the same to rolling stock maintenance.
