New attraction concept for Manila

A new DreamWorks attraction concept called DreamPlay will launch later this year as part of the City of Dreams casino resort in Manila, Philippines. DreamWorks Animation is partnering with iP2 Entertainment (3DBA) to realise the ‘edutainment’ focused facility, which will combine the best of the DreamWorks library of animated movies and media content with hands-on activities and play. Providing a welcome family-friendly component to City of Dreams, visitors will be able to interact with characters including Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Madagascar and How to Train Your Dragon.

“Harnessing leading digital technologies, this attraction is going to be unlike anything that currently exists and will undoubtedly become a new type of

Street slide!

For one day only – Sunday 4 May – visitors to Bristol, England, were able to enjoy a “pop up” slide set up down one of the city’s hilly streets. The 95m-long (300ft) water slide was installed on Park Street as part of Make Sunday Special and the Bristol Art Weekender.

Described as, “a simple architectural intervention and a playful response to the urban landscape,” the project was the idea of artist Luke Jerram. With an incline of 6.5°, riders slid at an average of 18km/h (just over 11mph). Almost 100,000 people signed up for their chance to secure a 'ticket to slide', however only 360 – one per minute – were lucky enough to be allocated a go via a random draw. Around 65,000 people are believed to have turned up on the day to watch.

“This massive urban slide transformed the street and asked people to take a fresh look at the potential of their city and the possibilities for transformation,” notes Jerram. “Imagine if there were permanent slides right across cities?”

The artist turned down funding from potential corporate sponsors, in favour of local support and crowdfunding and is now offering a downloadable document for others interesting in creating their own slide, including advice on getting approval from city authorities. Brazil’s Beach Park welcomed a record 1.7 million visitors in 2013 – a 14% increase compared with 2012. The facility enjoys the distinction of being Latin America’s largest waterpark. Located in Fortaleza, the local region enjoys an average 330 days of sunshine each year and typical temperatures of 81°F (27°C). No wonder everyone wants to cool off!

The park credits its success last year in large part to the new US$7 million Arrepius slide complex from ProSlide. Pictured here, however, is the 14- storey Insano – one of the world’s tallest waterslides. Beach Park management expects a further boost to business this summer as Fortaleza hosts various World Cup soccer matches in June and July.

A one-to-one orangutan experience!

The Indianapolis Zoo has opened a first-of-its-kind people mover system from Chance Rides. The Skyline, or SkyQuest as Chance calls it, forms an integral part of the new $26 million Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center and offers an unprecedented way to view the red-haired swinging creatures. Passengers travel in four-seater gondolas at heights of nearly 60ft (18m), where they can come into one-to-one contact with the orangutans as they explore their habitat and various climbing towers. In total the attraction features approximately 1,100ft (335m) of track.

Meanwhile British company 1st Attractions has provided a version of its interactive Virtual Zookeeper. Branded as Zooper Challenge, it provides information and challenges associated with 17 of the zoo’s animals, with a prize at the end.
