Ice Age comes to Indonesia

The Indonesian resort Ancol launched a new Ice Age themed attraction last month, featuring an immersive themed indoor flume ride. Park World profiles the mammoth new attraction billed as the country’s “first frozen adventure”

nspired by the hit animated films, Ice Age Arctic Adventure was realised in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products by a team assembled by iP2 Entertainment/3DBA. Design and development was handled by Pure Imagination Studios and PEL Design, animatonics and special effects were supplied by Art & Project of Italy, media content was by Pure Imagination, and theming carried out on-site by Ancol’s own team under the supervision of PEL’s Paul Lanham.

The indoor flume ride at the heart of the experience, by Hopkins/WhiteWater, invites Ancol guest to make a voyage with Sid’s Arctic Tours, where they are “guaranteed to get chills.” The journey is filled with animatronic characters, glaciers, geysers, waterfalls and other scenery, plus additional Ice Age multimedia content created especially for the attraction. The ride system comes complete with large 20- seater boats finished to look as though they have been carved from wood. The ride’s features are used to tell parts of the story. As the boats climb the lift, for example, blasts of water douse passengers from all around, signalling that the ice walls are giving way, and they are in danger of being swept up in a flood. A massive block of ice dangles precariously overhead ... and then comes sliding down, barely missing the boat. But guests are safe for a while as they travel through several jungle scenes. Later they encounter a volcano about to erupt. Boulders break off from the caverns, but now it’s not water streaming from the walls, it’s lava! Riders then hurtle down a steep watery drop to safety. At the end of the ride, a life size animatronic Sid waves guests goodbye, before they step off the boat and into dimly lit oceanic cave where they come into contact with Captain Gutt and Gutt’s Galleon, a custom-themed Kontiki rocking raft ride by Zierer.

Water turns to Ice “We wanted to create a family attraction that really brought to life the DNA of Ice Age,” explains Greg Lombardo, vice-president of global location-based entertainment at 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.

“A flume ride came up early on for all the obvious reasons – it allowed us to tell a story and brought in the element of water, which is a distinct part of the brand. The Kontiki ride was a great supplemental attraction that provided light thrills for the target demographic and worked perfectly around the pirate ice ship from Continental Drift from a theming perspective.” “The team assembled by iP2 Entertainment/3DBA was very passionate about bringing the IP to life in an exciting way,” continues Lombardo. “We found them to be great collaborators and eager to take on the challenges that an enormously successful franchise like Ice Age brings with it. This attraction had to be great and 3DBA was a key part of realising that goal.”

All about Ancol

Ancol is located in Indonesian capital of Jakarta and features several interconnected facilities including an amusement park (Dunia Fantasi), waterpark, eco park, marine park, marina, cable car, hotels and beachfront entertainment. Ice Age Arctic Adventure, however, is its first branded attraction with an external intellectual property. “Ancol is a proven, high calibre operator with a very successful park,” notes Lombardo. “I think they chose wisely to make an investment based on what their guests want – to engage in powerful ways with stories that are meaningful. Competition for theme park guests is heating up in the emerging markets, especially in South East Asia. Ice Age is an incredibly successful animated franchise with genuine resonance in the broader Asian market.” 20th Century Fox Consumer Products is already working with Ancol to create custom merchandise. In two years time, it will realise several Ice Age attractions at Resorts World Genting in Malaysia as part of a full Fox-branded park (previewed previously in Park World). The fifth film in the Ice Age franchise is expected to hit movie theatres also in 2016, making Ancol’s investment relevant for medium-long term.
