Finnish park brings back free gate and adds new ride High Voltage

After opening the kid-friendly Angry Birds Land and Koiramäki attractions in 2012/13, Finland’s Särkänniemi amusement park has added a new thrill ride to keep the teenagers happy in 2014. High Voltage is a Zamperla Power Surge finished in black and yellow, raising riders 15 metres into the air and them twisting around the end of its six arms as they turn through the sky. In total passengers are spun in three different directions, which means this is not an attraction for the faint-hearted!

“It’s a crazy ride!” the park’s development manager Ville Aarresuo told the local media after enjoying the experience. “The seats rotate freely but the ride is still pleasant.”

This season the park has reintroduced free admission and ride tickets after experimenting in 2013 with a less popular pay-one-price system. “We were the first park in Finland to introduce a

pay-one-price ticket,” Särkänniemi managing director Miikka Seppälä told Park World after the end of last season. “With Angry Birds Land and Koiramäki we thought we would be strong enough to make the

It joins a collection of 24 family rides at Coney Island.

Supernova bursts into Great Escape

This swinging Zamperla Discovery ride, named Supernova, is new for the 60th anniversary season at Six Flags Great Escape, Lake George, New York. Suspended from an overhead axis, 16 riders fly up to 50ft (15m) in the air while being spun in circles and experiencing maximum G-forces. Hold tight!

Seabreeze 2014

“Come Soar. Come Swing.” That’s the way Seabreeze Park, Rochester, New York, is promoting its two new attractions for 2014, the Great Balloon Race and Wave Swinger. The latter is a 36ft (11m) ride from Bertazzon, located on the site of the

previous Chance YoYo ride, which offered a similar motion. The custom-themed Wave Swinger offers both single and double chairs. The Great Balloon Race, meanwhile, is a Zamperla Samba Tower standing 42ft (12.8m) tall. Also fresh for 2014, the Kiddie City area of the park has been redeveloped with a new site configuration, ride renovations and theming.

Scandinavia there is a long tradition to have single ride tickets. Lesson learned: never underestimate the guests! We hope that as many people as possible will visit our park this summer, and

maybe an increase in volume would

make up for the deficit created by the more affordable prices.”

But will Seppälä be sampling High Voltage any time soon? “I’m a wimp,” he laughs. ”I really am nervous to try it. But I promise I will do it this summer.” Särkänniemi is located in Tampere, Finland’s second city and part of the Pirkanmaa region which has declared 2014 'The Year of Love'. To celebrate, the park is inviting a couple to get married on the longest day of the year, 21 June, when they will be able have the dolphins be their witness and take a romantic ride on the park’s carousel or observation tower.
