Warehouse safety improved with Salvo

F

ood manufacturer Greencore has installed

Castell’s drive-away prevention system Salvo at four UK sites.

The

interlocking device is providing loading bay

safety at Greencore’s Kiveton, Warrington, Wisbech and Park Royal facilities. Part of the risk assessment process identified a potential for a drive-away from the loading bays. Although Greencore had systems and procedures in place to prevent this type of occurrence,

the company investigated several

potential safety systems to negate the risk, before deciding that Salvo was the right choice.“Castell gave us the most competitive price and their product was the best suited to the task in hand,” said Simon Chamings, safety, health and environment officer at Greencore Kiveton. “Since installing Salvo we’ve had absolutely no problems whatsoever.” The shunter fits a Salvo Susie lock to a trailer’s exposed emergency airline, which immobilises the trailer and releases a key from the end of the Susie. The shunter then inserts the key into the SCP+ control panel unit next to the bay door. Turning the key powers up the bay, and illuminates a green beacon inside the warehouse and a red one in the yard. While the bay door is open, the key remains trapped in the SCP+ and therefore the trailer cannot be moved. When loading or unloading has been completed, the process is reversed.

acker Products carton shredders instantly convert everyday cardboard and corrugated board into a highly effective void fill. Save money by avoiding cardboard compacting and disposal costs, and eliminate the need to purchase additional protective packaging materials.

Carton Shredder & self-standing bag P

Recycle your cardboard into flexible matting, ideal for

wrapping or void fill, which provides optimum protection against damage during handling and transit. New invertor technology makes the latest machines 30% more energy efficient and capable of longer run times, making them safer, cleaner and quieter. The new self- standing bag is a ‘must have’ accessory, ideal for collecting your converted board. Hard, puncture resistant sides make the bags self-standing when empty, strong and easy to move but fully collapsible for storage. Two sizes available, holding 0.4c.m which is best used with Packer’s shredders, and 1.1c.m for larger projects, made from woven 200gsm polypropylene with corner lifting straps.

ontinuous or stationary pallet labeling: the modular LEGI-AIR 4050 P is specifically designed for these tasks. The system offers further advantages with regard to speed, security, fields of application, size and ease of servicing. Two-sided labeling LEGI-AIR 4050 P allows the labeling of two adjacent sides of

a pallet. Up to 7 pallets can be processed per minute, depending on the application. Variable data (e.g. text, barcode or logo) are printed precisely and legibly on the labels immediately before the application procedure. The labels are subsequently applied using swing-arm technology with diagonal bar. This patented process is very safe: the pallet rolls back out in the event of a power failure, for example. If, in doing so, it should come into contact with the extended applicator arm, the bar automatically pushes the arm out of the way. Products of varying dimensions can be labelled due to the large swing-arm radius of 400 mm. Thanks to the Tamp-Blow, LEGI-AIR 4050 P can also flexibly label boxes, crates and other types of packaging, including convex or concave-shaped product sur– faces. Labeling is possible in any conceivable installation position due to the symmetrical design. The compact dimensions of 1000 x 800 x 1200 mm (L x W x H) allow easy integration into existing production environments. LEGI-AIR 4050 P has a built-in service interval counter which informs the user in good time of the next service date.

the WTG through the twice yearly ‘exhibitions’ and various networking events. As co-director Alan will be jointly responsible – along with Mark Currie, CEO of Mantra Learning – for the growth of the group’s reputation in the warehousing and logistics sectors as an association that provides top quality,

Union Industries’ Sales Director, Alan Hirst, has been appointed co-director of the Warehouse Technology Group (WTG) U

nion Industries joined WTG in 2010 and Alan has been amongst one of the group’s most proactive partners, helping to increase awareness of

up-to-date, industry specific products and services. One

example of what Alan brings to the table is his idea of the WTG Champion scheme, which creates a collaborative approach allowing a package solution of the WTG partners’ products and services to be offered to architects, specifiers and end users alike. Established in 2006, WTG is a non-profit organisation comprised of around 20 of Europe’s leading industry suppliers to the logistics sector who are each committed to developing technology to improve productivity and standards in the sector.

Each has provided expertise, products or

equipment for the Logistics Research and Innovation Centre (LRIC) at Mantra’s learning and skills centre in Middleton, Manchester. LRIC is a fully-operational 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse, which is a multi- centre

functional designed to test new products, teach experienced

logistics workers new skills and provide new entrants the skills they need to be employed in a warehousing environment. Also acting as a showcase for the latest in warehouse, logistics and distribution technology and equipment, the centre provides a realistic commercial warehousing environment to demonstrate how the different technologies interface, and also a testing ground where new technology can be proven by experienced and novice learners in the process of receiving, handling, retrieving and distributing live freight. The vocational learning programmes provided by Mantra Learning include traineeships, apprenticeships, vocational qualifications, pre-employment programmes and a wide range of skills courses. Leeds-based Union Industries designs, manufactures, installs and maintains its own range of high speed doors. All the doors are bespoke and made to order, so Union can adapt its doors to suit the various demands of different industrial sectors as well as individual applications or customer requests. Alan said: “WTG is at the cutting edge of the industry and its hands-on approach allow new skills and technologies to be developed. “In the three years that Union Industries has been a member, I am proud to have contributed to its work and am delighted to become a co-director as we take the group forward by offering the industry new and innovative solutions.”
