All are available with ATEX (T4) approval and their non-electrical operation means they are classed as intrinsically-safe in hazardous environments, which reduces the possibility of explosion from the ignition of flammable gases. Air-powered gear motors are available in right-angle and in-line models, offer a maximum torque range of 8 to 587 Nm and gear ratios from 10:1 to 60:1 single reduction gear reducers.

Datatrack provides double the control at first components
irst Components of Brierley Hill in the West Midlands invested in PSL Datatrack production management and business administration software to ensure effective management of two businesses within its group. They supply both components and assemblies to a wide range of industries including aerospace, automotive, medical, electrical, white goods and general engineering. Under single management, the specialist engineering services and capabilities of First Components Limited and Savigny Oddie include CNC turning, CNC milling, presswork, wire cutting & forming, wire erosion, tool making and design. Services are backed by ISO 9001/2000 and QS9000 accreditations. A system was needed that would be able to manage both businesses but with the economic benefits and simplicity of investment in a single system. As with many businesses of this type, the administration of all tasks ranging from the initial quotation through to the final invoice are non-productive and need to be dealt with in the most efficient method possible - and in this case across two operating companies. It features sensor placement illustrations and is designed to help gas turbine operators select the optimal pressure sensors and accessories for monitoring gas turbines. With the trend toward increased fuel efficiency and low NOx emissions, today's gas turbines operate more efficiently but have to be closely monitored and controlled to avoid combustion instability. This can damage components in the combustion chamber such as nozzles, baskets and transition pieces, as well as downstream components such as blades, resulting in avoidable downtime and revenue loss. George Fischer takes channel fluid measurement to new level

iquid volumes and flow rates can be continuously monitored using sensitive yet rugged new sensors which have recently been added to the range of piping systems specialist, George Fischer.
The new Type 2270 Ultrasonic Blind Sensor and Type 2260 Ultrasonic Display Sensor have been designed to offer both ease of installation and use, as well as a long low maintenance life, and will find applications in the water, sewage treatment, chemical, manufacturing and (food?) processing industries. They are also suitable for measuring flows
in culverts and spillways where flood
monitoring is a priority. The sensors can be used in such roles as for calculating the dosage of chemicals required to control the pH value of a flow, for the accurate filling of storage tanks and in specialist treatments such as electro-plating. The various sizes and outputs of the 2270 and 2260 models operate on the ‘time of flight’ principle where a sound wave is transmitted from a point above the fluid surface and the time for the return signal to be received measured. This provides a reading of the level for the surface to an accuracy of +/- 0.2% of flow, with the sophistication of the technology enabling them to allow for wave height or the presence of dust and grease contamination. The sensors can further recognize and allow for ‘disturbing objects’ such as mixing paddles or ladders mounted on the side of tanks. The sender unit emits a narrow beam of sound to offer very good echo densities – which can therefore cope with light foaming of the liquid - while the user can also pre- program in different tank or channel shapes to facilitate the calculation of volumes. The construction of both units features the choice of polypropylene and PVDF materials for the casings, giving good resistance to aggressive environments and ease of cleaning. The displays on the 2270 and 2260 are large and easy to read, while they use a 4-20 mA signal strength to communicate with central monitoring devices, HART modem or process control systems. The 2270 can offer operating ranges of four or six metres while the 2260 encompasses models able to work up to a distance of 15 metres. Both can be used in proximity of process temperatures between -30 and + 90 degrees centigrade, while all units carry ATEX, CE and RoHs accreditation. Overall the design of the new sensors from George Fischer can simplify the measurement of volumes and flow rates with a standard of accuracy and reliability which can offer the potential to improve quality or save on dosing chemicals. The new Type 2270 Ultrasonic Blind Sensor and 2260 Ultrasonic Display Sensor sit within George Fischer’s level measurement portfolio primarily as non-contact devices ideal for use in large tanks and with aggressive chemicals.

without endangering personnel. The device is also attracting the attention of OEMs who wish to add value to their enclosure products by incorporating in- built safety devices. Maintenance engineers use a range of technologies in their preventative maintenance routines and two of the most effective are thermal imaging and ultrasound measurement. One shows anomalies in thermal performance of the system and the other detects arcing, tracking and corona that are sure signs of potential failure. Many electrical failures are caused by gradual degradation of equipment such as insulators, switches and connectors. Commonly the electricity flow is partially interrupted by the breakdown of the circuit. Early on, such faults produce noise that is detectable in the 40 kHz frequency range of ultrasonic data collection and may also produce heat depending on the type and severity of the defect.
