eam USA’s Joyance Meechai (New York City) and Steve Gebauer (Men- dota Heights, Minn.) made their inter-
ished with a 3-4 record in round robin play for 19th place in the 34-team event. Te U.S. team started the competition with a solid 10-2 win over Germany. “It is very comfortable here: the ice is smooth,
the German team was friendly,” Meechai said af- ter the win. “As we teamed up in the summer, this is our first mixed doubles world championship, and it is a big deal for us to be here. Our main goal is to have fun and enjoy every moment here.” Getting a win on the opening day of competi-
tion can be a confidence booster for rookie teams. “Te setting is comfortable, the ice is great. We are here for a fun adventure, but as athletes, of course we like to win,” Gebauer said. Unfotunately, the U.S. team lost its next three
games to dim their playoff hopes. Tey bounced back with two wins in a row – against Ireland, 10-0, and New Zealand, 9-7, in an extra end. Te U.S. team closed out the tournament with a 7-1 loss to playoff-bound Spain. Switzerland went on to win its fiſth world
mixed doubles title in just seven years (the event began in 2008). Te Swiss team of cousins Reto Gribi and Michelle Gribi de- feated Sweden, 8-6. Tis was the third straight loss in the championship final for Swe- den. Spain won the bronze medal with a 7-4 win over last year’s champions from Hun- gary. Te 2015 USA Curling
Mixed Doubles National Championship to determine the team for the 2015 world championship will take place Dec. 3-7 in Eau Claire, Wis. Te dates and location for the 2015 world mixed doubles championship has not been announced yet by the World Curling Federation. n
