Volunteer support is driving force of organization’s successes

By Shelley Dropkin, USWCA President

you truly love, time becomes something that really doesn’t matter so much. And, “most” anything to do with curling I truly do love. As I step back and look at the year we have

I

had, what strikes me most is the sheer num- ber of volunteers who have been involved in nearly every aspect of what has occurred, not only in this past year, but in the many years before us and those yet to come. For this past year, some of the activities

have included the running of a major nation- al event at Broomstones, which Dawn Gutro led with her National Bonspiel Committee; managing two national semi-annual meet- ings, led by Carolyn MacLeod as our meeting planner; managing the organization of more than 25 committees, which Elaine Ritchie facilitated; and supporting the nu- merous regional and national events, with the critical support of ice, officiating, food, and operations personnel. Te list could and literally does go on and on! I would simply like to extend a personal and heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the many individuals who have contributed their time, energy and commitment to an event that your club and/or our organization have sponsored. We literally could not have done it without your effort and willingness to do so! Over the course of the past three articles, I wanted to facilitate and educate

Dropkin

our membership toward a clearer understanding of the USWCA as an organiza- tion and our several areas of focus including: • A history and overview of the organization and how it has evolved • Te annual USWCA events hosted by clubs in regions across the coun- try

• Te international (incoming and outgoing) tours with Canada and Scotland

n writing this closing article as the United States Women's Curling As- sociation’s president, I’m not quite sure where the time has gone this year, but I look at that as a good sign. When you are doing something that

As part of this closing article, I would like to focus on funding which has been

provided to women and youth over the past several years. Te Women’s Curl- ing Development Fund (WCDF) has supported the growth and development of women and youth in our sport since its founding in 1998. It was founded with the purpose of motivating and supporting women at the grassroots level with financial grants. Over the past several years, the WCDF has funded numerous efforts including: •

Supplementing the cost of arena ice rental for a 5-year-and-under 'spiel (Bowling Green) and a junior summer skills camp (Coyotes Curling Club)

• Assisting the coach of a junior women’s team attend a coaching devel- opment camp (Toronto)

• Compensating travel expenses for junior women’s teams to attend the Optimist U18 event (Toronto and Langley, Canada); travel assistance for a college student to attend the College Nationals; and a team to at- tend Junior Nationals and a team to attend the Pacific International Cup

• Assisting an individual female curler at an intensive training and curl- ing event in Toronto; and purchasing of time clocks for use at USWCA bonspiels.

Te WCDF welcomes donations of any size, which are tax deductible.

Tese giſts may be given, as well, in honor of someone in memoriam. All such giſts will be formally acknowledged. Information about donations and grant applications are available on the USWCA website – www.uswca.org. In closing, I would like to say how much working closely with the USWCA

as an organization has meant to me. Te talent, energy and capability of the individuals in our organization are simply endless. I look forward to continu- ing to support the evolution of our organization and its future leadership. In the meantime, please enjoy your “off season,” as the next curling season will be upon us before we know it! I wish the very best to you all. P.S. If your club is not YET a member of the USWCA, please consider joining

our remarkable group of 66 member clubs and more than 3,500 members! Te benefits are where it all starts – at the grassroots level - very reasonable, with new ideas and opportunities, and a dollar well spent! Please go to our website to find out more information at www.uswca.org. n
