C. ROBERT CRAIG MEMORIAL LIBRARY, KEN CHIVERS COLLECTION: PORT-AUX-BASQUES, NFLD, CANADA; JUNE, 1952

fore our visit. You don’t think of a ma- jor Class 1 railroad building wooden cars in 1957, but the CN did just that in Newfoundland. Modeling this car would be an interesting project and in S scale, 42″ gauge equipment can be operated on HO gauge track.

Gathering prototype inspiration Just about all North American nar-

row gauge modeling is based on railroad operations of the past. Whether these railroads were in Colorado, California, Maine, or some other spot on the map, such as Newfoundland, modelers inter- ested in accurately portraying the past need to have some knowledge of the his- tory of the line they are modeling. Books and magazine articles are a great place

to start, but don’t forget state and local historical societies, libraries (including those at universities), railroad historical societies, and on-line forums. When it came to finding photos to go

with our caboose drawings, we were put in touch with the C. Robert Craig Memo- rial Library in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (www.ovar.ca/CraigLibrary/craiglib.htm). The library focuses on rail transporta- tion in Canada, and in addition to books and magazines, it houses an extensive collection of railway photographs, over 50,000 of which have been catalogued and are being scanned. The three ac- companying photos of Newfoundland wood cabooses, or “cabin cars,” come from their files and illustrate cars built prior to the one shown in our plans.

Rails Beyond the Rutland

CHUCK KILLIAN: ST. JOHNS, NFLD, CANADA; MAY 8, 1977

While we didn’t see any wooden cabooses in Newfoundland, we did come across this board- ing car (above). Similar in appearance to the caboose featured in the plans, but with only one end platform and two side windows, it was built for work train service. The railway was using steel cabooses, like this one (below) on the rear of the mixed train near Deer Lake.
