The State Belt, William H. and Michelle S. Kaufman For decades, the waterfront of San Francisco was served by a railroad called the State Belt of California. It operated with steam switch engines until dieselization with Alco power in 1946. It was built to serve the piers and industries of the waterfront area, interchanging with Southern Pacific at King Street, and with Santa Fe, Northwestern Pacific, and Western Pacific by car float. But eventually decline set in, despite dieselization, as seaborne traffic became container-
ized and industries moved out of San Francisco. Lessee Kyle Railways took over in 1973 and lasted to 1993. But remnants of the Belt remain visible in San Francisco. Numerous historical photos, few ever before published, lists of industries served, and detailed descriptions of operation, make this the definitive book on the State Belt.
172 pages, 242 photos, 61 in color; 15 maps and drawings, index. Price: $60 Another of our fine rail history titles: Southern Pacific Ten-coupled Locomotives, by Robert J. Church
