steel pin, and at the corners the last sev- eral inches of the chord are not welded to the sides. Rather than the car’s cor- ners getting torn apart when the sides or chord are hit by something during loading, the pinned joint lets the corners deflect a little and remain intact. Thrall and Trinity combined in 2001.
The ExactRail model is an accurate scale replica of their 2,743 cubic foot gon. Even taking the thickness of the molded car sides into account, its interior length and width are within an N scale inch or two of the prototype’s. The exterior dimen- sions are right on or within fractions of a scale inch, measuring 53′-6″ over the body (top chords), 10′-6″ extreme width at the top chords, and 43′-6″ truck cen- ters (clearance Plate B modified for the longer truck centers, hence the narrow width.) The bolster centers are within a few scale inches of the correct 5′-6″ rela- tionship to the strikers. The cars come equipped with reliably-operating, body- mounted magnetic knuckle couplers with a near scale draft gear opening. The roller bearing trucks scale out
nicely at their 5′-10″wheelbase and have blackened metal wheelsets with a good looking tread and flange contour. They operate well over turnouts, but do not roll as freely as most of us would like. (A twist of the point of a No. 2 pencil in the axle bearing surfaces will help.) The model weighs one ounce exactly, and there is no problem with it on typical N scale curves either alone or coupled to a like car. The underside of the car is ful- ly modeled with body crossbearers, stringers, and separately-applied brake gear and piping (a one-piece molding!). The molded carbody is crisp and re-
alistly rendered, the paint and letter- ing, superb. The car numbers sampled are correct for their prototypes. The cars are sold direct-only on line and re- tail starting at $24.95. See the website for the road names that are presently available. Hundreds of these gondolas are on the rails today with railroad or TILX (Trinity Leasing) reporting marks. They are appropriate for almost any layout set in the last two decades.–BILL SCHAUMBURG.
