DL&W standard concrete tower: HO scale

www.thenarch.com. Every railroad has its own signature structures. For the Lackawanna rail- road, the concrete tower would have to be theirs. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the Lackawanna Rail- road built 18 concrete towers between Hoboken, New Jersey, and Bingham- ton, New York. The towers all shared a standard appearance but most were unique in their window arrangement. One standard design did emerge amongst the 18 towers. This standard design was that of the “large” towers. These towers had the biggest footprint as well as the same window and door arrangement. The topography around the tower dictated whether there was a basement or not, but for the most part
these towers were all identical. I had always considered myself to be knowledgeable about Lackawanna structures but didn’t realize how little I knew about the concrete towers until I started this project. Fortunately, Bob Bahrs has written an extremely thor- ough article on the Lackawanna’s con- crete towers in Vol. 21, No. 2 of Flags, Diamonds and Statues. Without that article, I would not have such an un- derstanding of this building and its smaller concrete brethren. Models of the Lackawanna’s concrete
tower have been virtually nonexistent in the past. There was one plaster kit which was offered years ago in limited numbers, but it was a model of “UN” tower at Port Morris and could not be used correctly as a model of any of the other towers. The kit for the standard concrete tower by the N Scale Architect is correct for ten out of the 18 towers.
