Had you already successfully installed this wall cladding in other kinds of public venues? How did you identify sports venues as another market which could benefi t from this safety innovation?


Indeed, one of the fi rst large projects was approximately 3,000 m² of architectural bomb-blast-resistant glass cladding for an airport. Heathrow Airport was among the fi rst airports that identifi ed this potential threat. In close collaboration with the airport, Lindner developed a special bomb blast- resistant glass wall cladding adapted to the latest requirements for the new fl agship project, Terminal 2, which is also to be called the Queen’s Terminal.


Generally, large sport events such as the Olympics or matches between rival sport teams always have been and always will be the focus of possible attacks. Sport venues and stadiums in particular are under threat due to large crowds of people coming together. With regards to this critical situation, Lindner identifi ed especially stadiums as another fi eld of activity which could benefi t from these new developments.


Have you already successfully installed your system into sports venues?


Not yet as this is still a very new development. However, we are already in close contact with architects dealing with sport venues all over the world. Furthermore, architects are more and more requesting information from us regarding this type of safety issue. So we are looking forward to receiving our fi rst order for bomb blast-resistant products within a stadium, in addition to all the interior fi t-out and facades projects we have already completed in the stadium sector.


How did you get involved in these sports projects?


Lindner has a specialist department which tries to collaborate with


architects at a very early stage of development. In most cases it is this personal contact with architects. We try to support architects during the design stage in fi nding the right solutions for each individual project, hoping to be awarded the contract at a later stage.


What kind of forms can the cladding have?


Lindner bomb blast wall claddings offer a variety of different design options. The tested materials – synthetics, metal and glass – can be furnished with numerous shapes, layout arrangements and surfaces, including different colours or even digital prints. As a matter of course, the Lindner bomb blast wall cladding’s appearance does not differ from a common glass wall lining, and can also be perfectly combined with other Lindner products such as metal ceilings or raised fl ooring with their wide range of options.


When it comes to the question of how and where to make the interiors of a stadium a safer place, Lindner’s answer is by applying, for example, impressive architectural wall claddings used for advertising or route instructions. Moreover, front claddings for shops and kiosks within the stadium can be a possible fi eld of application. Regarding kiosks, Lindner can also deliver complete solutions with, for example, bomb blast claddings connected to raised fl oors and suspended ceilings with optional heating and cooling technologies as well as lighting.


It sounds as if your solutions are designed for both new build projects and the renovation of existing venues?


This is of course possible. Especially the interiors can be a decisive point when it comes to refreshing the soul of a building. We are also currently


testing materials like GFRC (Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete) or a new development, the so-called HLWC (Hybrid Light-Weight Concrete) panels which would perhaps also fi t perfectly into a renovation concept for a stadium.


Are you working on any notable sports projects at the moment?


Yes, at the moment our subsidiary Lindner Steel & Glass is currently installing a complex design facade to the new Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, UAE. Lindner has also completed large projects in the past at famous sports venues like Wembley Stadium and the Olympic Velodrome in London, completed in 2012.


Which regions/countries do you see offering the best growth potential for your sports work?


Generally, we see the best growth potential in countries which are going to host large sport events in the future, e.g. the FIFA World Cups in Russia 2018 and of course Qatar 2022, which have to build a lot of stadiums to be suitable places for a world championships. Furthermore, the Olympics are also of great interest for us, as this is also the time for countries to have their main stadiums renovated, extended or even new stadiums are to be built which are in accordance with the high-class regulations issued for sport venues being part of such mega events. 
