Selecting your basketball floor

purpose while others are targeted to specifi c athletic activities. Let’s look at the desired playing characteristics and performance standards to be considered when selecting a basketball fl oor system. Selecting the right athletic fl oor system for your facility requires a time investment, but your investment will be rewarded with the knowledge that you researched and considered the many products available and selected the hardwood fl oor system that best fi ts your players’ needs, and facility and budget requirements.


Researching fl oor systems is equally important for both new construction and renovation. Renovation projects bring additional challenges to the process simply because of the

constraints of the existing facility and the current slab depression. With a renovation project, it is critical to determine by site examination the fl oor system currently installed, the existing product’s profi le height, and any special demolition concerns. We recommend a small opening be made in the existing fl oor system in a corner or off court area so the exact conditions can be inspected and a concise plan of action and product selection can be made. With this information confi rmed, you can determine what new systems have matching profi le heights out of the manufacturers’ product portfolios, and if any demolition challenges exist. On the other hand, a new facility offers a blank canvas; the slab depression can be constructed to accommodate the profi le of the fl oor system selected.
