MIDWEST Growth of junior triathlon within the USA Triathlon Midwest Region
has enabled the area to produce three of the six junior triathletes representing the United States at the recent International Triathlon Union World Championships. Tamara Gorman (Rapid City, S.D.) became our first U.S. female champion, and two other Midwest Region athletes, Stephanie Jenks (Aurora, Iowa) and Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D.), competed. As the 2014 season nears, USA Triathlon’s Florida Region is preparing its members with several programs to help increase their performance for 2014. The goal of this program is to attract more age-groupers to the sport of triathlon through a series of different developmental camps. The camps will include an affordable registration fee and a special lodging rate at the host hotel. The camp schedule and focus will vary based on the target group for that particular camp. The camp will take place the same weekend as a local sprint race so athletes have the option to race the next day. The locations are spread throughout Florida to reach a greater. and commitments of IronKids (sponsored predominately by Hy-Vee) and USA Triathlon have driven interest and participation. The Hy-Vee IronKids series was initially developed in the Midwest, and the bulk of its races and national championships remain there. Non-draft IronKids racing serves as a great introduction to triathlon for kids of all levels. As IronKids grew in popularity, age-group races in the region began to incorporate youth events. Simultaneously, USA Triathlon engaged in an effort to develop junior triathletes. USA Triathlon created its Junior Elite Cup Series with draft-legal racing at venues across the nation. These events have increasingly developed in participation and sophistication. The advent of USA Triathlon High Performance Teams (HPTs) is another
factor promoting growth of youth and junior participation. USAT’s stated goal is to “increase the number and quality of developmental programs serving teenage and developmental elite athletes across the nation,” by providing seed grants to those seeking to establish junior triathlon teams. Hy-Vee’s imprint on the development of youth and junior triathlon cannot be ignored. Hy-Vee sponsors a spectator-friendly professional event in Des Moines, Iowa, with the largest purse in triathlon.
