THE OFFSEASON — A PERFECT TIME FOR CHANGE I

By Jayme McGuire

t’s only fitting that the theme of this issue is “change” when our cover features an athlete who recently experienced one of life’s biggest changes. Emma Garrard, XTERRA’s top American woman, knows a little something about how to deal with change. Over the past year, Garrard adjusted her routine during pregnancy, delivered a healthy baby boy and slowly resumed to training.

When she returned to racing four months

later, she didn’t expect much, but her body and mind adapted to her new lifestyle and she found herself training more efficiently and racing better than ever. She and other tri moms past, present and future are proving that triathletes are the ultimate multitaskers. Flip to page 34 to read our cover story, then check out our triathlon

MAILBAG PRAISE FOR MILWAUKEE

super dads feature on page 40. Continuing on this issue’s theme of change, as athletes we’re sometimes afraid of change. Our coaches warn us not to make big changes before races. “Don’t try anything new before race day,” they say. But with so many great innovations and ideas in the multisport world, it’s hard to resist the urge to change things up. Now is the time. Experiment with a new strength training regimen (page 24) and maybe you’ll finally get rid of that nagging Achilles injury. Tired of doing an hour of freestyle every other day at the pool? Cross-train your swim by incorporating ALL four strokes (page 28).

I was fortunate to participate in this year’s USA Triathlon Age Group Nationals. Triathlon has led me to Nationals in Oregon, Alabama and Vermont. Additionally, I’ve been part of Team USA, competing in Hamburg, Vancouver, Gold Coast, Budapest and Auckland. I wanted to give all of you great kudos for a fabulous race site and race organization. Milwaukee never was on my list for a must-do destination. Nationals sounded horrid in an industrial city with hot and humid weather. Was I wrong! Milwaukee offered us great access to the race site with hotels, great restaurants, impressive historic areas, riverwalk, beautiful plantings and obvious civic pride. On our bike ride through the towns of St. Francis and Cudahy, we could experience a true working harbor/ port, along with charming neighborhoods.

In all cases, we were impressed with the police work to make our race safe. Every street corner was blocked. The volunteers were incredible. The local population came out to cheer with great enthusiasm. Using the waterfront was ideal for the race site layout and was gorgeous. I’ve raved about the race (safe water, one loop bike on closed roads, beautiful run) and the location. I’m looking forward to returning next

I just wanted to reach out and say I loved Jeff Matlow’s “Oh, the places you’ll tri!” in the USA Triathlon Magazine delivered to my home. I’m a 50-year-old beginner who completed four sprint tris this past summer with help from Team in Training. I typed the entire page on our “TNT Tri forum” page for everyone to enjoy. Thanks for making me smile! — Rhonda Dixon, Columbus, Ohio

I absolutely LOVED Jeff Matlow’s “Oh the Places You’ll Tri” piece! I read and re-read it, identified with it and laughed all the way. You really captured the sport. That was so creative and well done. I’m hanging on to that page! — Cortney Martin, Blacksburg, Va.
