Women are able to get back into their sport quickly, and that’s a big plus,” says Ma- zur, adding that pregnancy naturally weakens the pelvic floor, lower back and abdominal muscles, while compromising various ligaments, tendons and myofas- cial tissue — all crucial anatomical ele- ments for triathletes. “But I always tell my post-pregnancy patients to expect it to take between 12-14 months for the body to get back to where it was before, and even more if you have a cesarean section, since that’s an invasive procedure. It just doesn’t happen overnight.”


n THE COMEBACK TRAIL Garrard certainly didn’t waste any


time hopping back on the horse — or in her case, the bike and skis. A week after her natural delivery, Garrard, itchy to get out of the house, bundled up Torin in a BABYBJÖRN, strapped on some skis and headed out to the trails near her home in Park City, Utah. Within two months, she was back to


running, cycling and swimming, not to mention backcountry skiing and towing Torin in a Chariot carrier on a 22-mile Nordic ski trail, covering more than 900 feet in elevation gain. On April 13, she placed seventh among pros at the XTERRA West Championships


in Las Vegas, with 4-month-old Torin greeting her at the finish. “Racing the 2013 season was always


part of the plan after I found out I was pregnant, so that kept me motivated to train. Still, I was fatigued and my body and mind were adapting to the demands of motherhood and nursing,” she says. “I didn’t have major expectations. I was just excited to be out there.” While Garrard continued to race lo-
