USA TRIATHLON ANNOUNCES 2014 JUNIOR ELITE SERIES
U
SA Triathlon has set the dates for the 2014 USAT Ju- nior Elite Series. The four-race series prepares ath-
letes ages 13-19 for draft-legal racing. The series kicks off in Richmond, Va., on May 4. As the season opener, Rich- mond is the first opportunity for athletes to secure a spot for nationals. Next, athletes will head west to Monroe, Wash., on June 21. On July 13, the series lands in West Des Moines, Iowa, which serves as the final opportunity to qualify for nationals. The series concludes at the USA Triathlon Youth & Junior Elite National Championships in West Chester, Ohio, Aug. 2-3. The three Youth Elite/Junior Elite Cup events serve as the qualifiers for nationals.
All athletes must pass through the qualifiers to get to nationals. Along the way they earn points toward both a series and national draft-legal ranking. Athletes affiliated with junior development teams also score points for their respective teams. The top individual and team scorers are recognized at nationals. COLLEGIATE RECRUITMENT PROGRAM MOVES TO SCOTTSDALE FOR 2014
USA Triathlon recently moved the Collegiate Recruitment Program base from Colo-
rado Springs, Colo., to Scottsdale, Ariz. The program is run by Level III Certified Coach Melissa Mantak with advisory sup-
port from Bobby McGee and Jonathan Hall. The collegiate recruits will be in Scottsdale through the end of February. Most will race in early-season domestic races, and the top athletes will continue on to ITU World Cup and World Triathlon Series competition. The change was driven by climate (outdoor winter training), ability to focus on cy-
cling skill/technique and providing a sea level environment. The athletes have a net- work of running trails, cycling routes (on- and off-road) and long course community pools for training. USA Triathlon also is utilizing the local Life Time Fitness facility.

OLYMPIC GAMES QUALIFICATION SET
T
he 2014 Youth Olympic Games will take place in Nanjing, China, Aug. 16-
28. Athletes born in 1997 and 1998 (ages 16 and 17 on December 31, 2014) are eligible to compete in the Youth Olympic Games. The event consists of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer draft-legal bike, and a 5-kilo- meter run. A mixed team relay of two men and two women is contested as well, with teams made up of athletes representing their continental affiliation. male and one female athlete to compete in the Games. An initial selection will be made for up to eight athletes per gender to compete at the continental qualifier in Monterrey, Mexico, on May 2. This se- lection will take into account 2013 Youth Elite/Junior Elite National Rankings, as well as finish position at the 2014 PATCO North American Junior Championships on March 8 in Sarasota, Fla. The top male and female U.S. finishers
at Monterrey will earn USAT’s nomination to the Games, provided they finish high enough overall to earn USAT one of the eight spots allocated to the Pan American region. The full qualification criteria is available at
