CENTURY OF THE CITY How and why cities will drive tourism success
National Geographic Traveler, Senior Vice President and Editor-in-Chief, Keith Bellows, National Geographic’s Urban Insider columnist and industry journalist, Annie Kitzsimmons, and Ian Macfarlane, who has developed and implemented marketing strategies for over 25 years including the world’s smart cities multimedia programme, contemplated how cities can draw more tourists at WTM’s Century of the City seminar on Tuesday.
All the world’s destinations are battling each other for customers and in this Century of the City, a city must be different to succeed, in order to attract more visitors from both the pleasure and business travel markets. A city must ‘stake out a unique position in an authentic way’. Cities will compete with each other for talented people, investment, business and visitors, and competitive advantage will be determined on how ‘livable’ a city is. The vision and drive that cities need to retain their cultures and identities and become the ‘must-go-to’ destinations for discerning travellers of all kinds were discussed in-depth at this seminar with advice and suggestions offered.
