Optimism • The global economy is slowly starting to recover, with the US and UK seeing their lowest unemployment figures since 2009.

• This recovery is having a positive impact on the travel industry, with a record 1,035 billion trips taken in 2012.
• 50% of those polled identify political instability as having the greatest negative impact on the tourism industry while 1/4 believe that taxes pose the greatest concern.
Olympics • Nearly 2/3 of senior industry executives report an increase in demand
for London from holidaymakers.
• 54% report feeling the increase UK-wide. As a result, half of all travel companies have increased their capacity – 52% for London and 48% for the UK.
• Data from the National Office of Statistics shows that the first eight months of 2013 have seen more visits to the UK than the same period in any other year.

• UNWTO predicts that the industry will fare even better in 2013, with a projected 4% increase in trips in 2012.

Aviation • A new trend for no-frills carriers offering a business-class service has taken off in the Middle Eastern aviation industry and looks set to expand.
• 87% of senior industry officials believe that the trend could be successful in other regions – Europe and Asia are felt to be the areas best suited to the new and emerging business model.
• 56% of those polled fear that London’s position as a major global aviation hub will be under threat if airport capacity is not increased. 47% think it is under threat regardless if capacity is increased or not.
• 2/3 of the industry’s senior executives fear that the increase in Air Passenger Duty tax will result in reduced inbound tourism for the UK.
Emerging Markets • Senior industry executives believe that China is the most important
of the BRICS countries in terms of the impact of inbound tourism on their businesses.
• The reasons cited for this are the size of the potential market and overall potential spend.
• The SLIMMA countries are emerging travel and tourism powerhouses. • Nine of the top 30 destinations identified as having the greatest travel and tourism potential are in Asia.

Travel Resources • Peer review sites remain the key resource for UK holidaymakers when
planning holidays.
• Fears that the traditional hard copy guidebook is becoming redundant were contradicted by the report, which found that 59% of holidaymakers use guide books compared to 25% who print from the web and 20% who use an app.
• 43% of holidaymakers report that they use social media on holiday and 48% state that they will be more inclined to use social media following a decrease in roaming charges by the EU.
UK Trends • ‘Staycations’ are going strong, with the majority of UK holidaymakers
citing the UK as their destination of choice for 2014.
• UK holidaymakers revealed that the celebrity family they would most like to sit next to on a plane is Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and baby George.
