The latest stage in the multi-million pound project to transform 350 hectare of land into a new visitor destination has completed in Scotland. Located between Grangemouth and

Falkirk, the £43m Helix scheme is creating a new greenspace for the 16 communities on its periphery. The latest phase of works, completed by

Go-ahead for Altrincham regeneration

TRAFFORD Council have approved plans for a £70m mixed use leisure development scheme in Altrincham, Cheshire. The Altair project includes a new leisure

centre; a range of leisure-based retail outlets, restaurants, coffee shops and cafes; a tenpin bowling alley; 150 new apartments and townhouses, as well as office space and a car park. Manchester-based developer Nikal has been given the go ahead for the development which will complement the £19m transport interchange scheme, which is already underway in the historic market town. Situated on a 4.5 acre brownfield site

located between Tesco and Altrincham Leisure Centre, the scheme aims to

regenerate the town drawing trade and people back to the area. By combining local and national occupiers, Altair will provide a platform for both local residents and visitors from further afield to enjoy the town. Altair will offer contemporary space and expand on the existing evening economy. “We’ve designed Altair so it will provide much needed linkages between the different areas of Altrincham, helping to enhance trade and dwell time for residents and visitors. The new office space will attract further investment from businesses currently situated outside the town and borough and the apartments and townhouses will create new housing opportunities not seen in the area,” says Nick Payne, managing director of Nikal.

The centrepiece of the new canal link is the Kelpies lock which features two 30m high stainless steel sculptures in the shape of horses heads designed by sculptor Andy Scott. Other facilities include a visitor centre,

cafe, splash play area, timber play area and multiple community projects.

Scottish entertainment venue launches

Scotland’s largest purpose-built public event arena has launched in Glasgow. Designed by Foster + Partners, the SSE

Hydro has capacity for 12,000 seated or 13,000 with standing in the performance bowl, and includes 11 hospitality boxes, two large VIP suites and a club seating level. As well as accommodating concerts

and stage sets, the arena will be configured as a sporting venue to host netball and gymnastics during Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games. The new building joins the Clyde

Auditorium on the northern bank of the River Clyde within Glasgow’s former docks, and has been designed from the

inside-out to ensure excellent views of the stage and high quality acoustics. Externally, the arena is wrapped in lightweight translucent panels taking the excitement of the concert to the city – the whole building can be illuminated to glow as a beacon of colour on the waterfront.
