Battersea Power Station Phase 3

Architectural practices Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners are to design the third phase of Battersea Power Station. Hailed as one of the most exciting areas of the development, Phase 3 is known as the High Street and includes a 200 room hotel overlooking the town square and the Power Station, 350,000sq ft of retail and restaurant space, a 15,000sq ft library and further leisure space. The mixed-use Battersea Power Station

master plan is designed by Rafael Viñoly. It spans 39 acres of prime River Thames frontage and comprises over 3,400 new homes as well as offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafés, hotels, community and leisure space and 18 acres of open space. Specialist restoration architects Wilkinson Eyre is appointed to the Power Station building and Ian Simpson Architects alongside dRMM has designed Circus West, Phase 1 of the development.

New cultural centre for Chester

A former cinema is to be transformed into a £37.5m theatre, library and cinema complex in Chester. Built in 1936, the Grade II listed cinema

is to be restored and converted into a contemporary city library, including a café, study spaces and a 120-seat screen located on the former cinema balcony. An 800-seat theatre will be housed in a new building, linked to the existing by open foyer spaces. Fully equipped to receive touring

productions, the main theatre auditorium will also convert into a 600-seat venue to support Chester-based productions. A separate 150-seat studio will provide flexible rehearsal and education space. Architects Bennetts Associates and Kier

Construction have been chosen to transform the former Odeon cinema into a cultural centre for the city. The architects, which were appointed in June 2012 to produce the concept design for the new cultural complex, will begin detailed design

work almost immediately. Kier is expecting to start work on site in February 2015. Cllr Stuart Parker, executive member for culture and economy, said the new

cultural offer is essential to the future economy of Chester. “Every £1 spent in that direction produces a return of six times that amount.”
