high backed oak framed seating, with integral glazing and glass doors that define the area. Again, the curved shelving follows the curve created by the curve of the external amphitheatre. The bright yellow flooring of the ground

floor contrasts yet blends with the blue of the galvanised steel and the red warmth of the oak veneer. The oak theme was continued for the 60mm worktops of the study, coffee tables, pods and counters throughout the library, giving a substantial and stylish appearance, while providing a practical maintenance solution. The facade shelving sits behind the metal

filigree cladding that references Birmingham’s industrial and artisanal heritage, where visitors can read, study, or just daydream and enjoy the view over the city. The laminated bench-desking looks as if it’s free floating but is retained through intricately engineered, concealed supports.

The generous work surfaces of 960mm and 760mm gives users plenty of work space to set down with their own device or use some of the fixed PCs. Throughout, counters and pods have deep thick oak clad tops and metal cladding (sprayed red in the Repertory Theatre and Silver in the library)and integrated plinth lighting. The library shares The Link foyer with the Repertory Theatre where the wood and steel theme is continued via the ice cream parlour, box office and retail units. Bright red bespoke seating units, curved lounge seating and stools give visitors plenty of places to rest, and the bar and restaurant areas continue the oak theme with deep oak worktop units. Level 3 is home to one of the largest BFI Mediatheques in the country providing free access to the BFI national archive. Demco has previously installed BFI Mediatheque booths in Cambridge and Wrexham public

Particular attention to detail was paid to installation of the ‘power poles’ with Demco liaising with the flooring contractors to ensure that no pole floor plates were visible, keeping the booths uncluttered and simple, a theme throughout the library. Soft furnishings add the finishing touch and Demco sourced and project managed the delivery of all the seating to meet the architect’s strict guidelines. This included the stylish ‘Take a Line for a Walk’ red chairs throughout the library, the white and red ball chairs on the lower ground floor and the dark grey Flow Chairs finished in sleek, neoprene effect, Kvadrat Scuba fabric.
