INDOCHINA

Maldives-style villas are perched

over the waters of a marine reserve in Cambodia’s untouched Koh Rong Archipelago and styled with driftwood furniture. There is an infi nity pool, rainforest spa, watersports and a notable eco-programme. For smaller budgets, hotels like the

Kep Beach House (now a two-night stay on Travel Indochina’s Cambodia Revealed tour) offers sea views and all mod-cons at a more affordable price. Another up-and-coming area

for more adventurous travellers is the Cardamom Mountains, near Cambodia’s western border with Thailand. Cox & Kings is just one operator which features the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge. This four-star eco- lodge is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding villages, Tatai waterfalls and the untouched jungles and mangroves. It features 10 luxury fl oa tents with ensuites and private balconies on fl oating pontoons. Lesser-known Laos’ most visited

city is UNESCO World Heritage town Luang Prabang. Its protected status means only small boutique hotels can be built there – a great selling point for travellers looking for an authentic and personal experience. The town’s golden temples, colonial villas and easy-going markets selling locally- made silks should seal the deal. Laos’ capital, Vientiane, is also a popular stop. It’s a serene capital city where French architecture blends

“Indochina’s is a year-round destination. There is excellent beach weather between April and June.”

with bustling Asian commerce. Coming up fast on the rails is rural Laos. Once a backpacker backwater, Nong Khiaw in the north is starting to open up to more well-heeled tourists. Here, the Nam Ou River Valley has scenery similar to China’s famous Guilin, with misty limestone peaks rising from neat rows of rice paddies, but with far fewer tourists. Audley Travel offers the Nong Khiaw Riverside Resort here – 15 bungalows on the lush river banks. Another popular sell in Indochina is a river cruise.

“At the moment we’re seeing a rise in bookings for these,” says Joe Sutcliffe, Wendy Wu Tours’ Head of Product and Marketing. He adds: “It’s a great way to see Indochina without having to move hotels. You also get to see the lesser-explored, more rural areas, all from the comfort of a fi ve- star river cruiser.”
