ISLAND BY ISLAND Caribbean

The Caribbean continues to face challenges, but the sheer range and variety of its destinations and a raft of great-value deals and added extras make 2014 a great time to visit, says Judith Baker

A

lthough The Caribbean continues to be popular with British

holidaymakers tourism fi gures are down. The region has been slow to compete with beach destinations in Thailand and the Indian Ocean when it comes to devising increasingly competitive offerings, particularly at the luxury end of the market – but that is changing. Around one million land-based visitors travelled from the UK to the Caribbean

last year, down from 1.1 million in 2011. However the region’s strong campaigns and special packages offering value for money leave the Caribbean well placed to lure visitors back to the islands in 2014. UK travel to the region as a whole

is expected to improve marginally, although some countries, especially those in the Eastern Caribbean, will likely benefi t more than others. Some islands are looking to diversify

their tourism product range, with a new focus on nature and sports tourism in particular, while others are looking at promoting twin-centre holidays. A number of new hotels and tours, a new international airport on St Vincent and an increase in airlift should also help to contribute to a useful boost in ex-UK visitor numbers. But how should agents match the ‘right island’ to the ‘right client’?
