Airlines plan busy
transatlantic crossings THERE will be more transatlantic
flight options in 2014 with several airlines announcing new or increased services to the USA.
Gatwick will once again offer direct flights to New York next summer (from July 3) when low-cost carrier Norwegian restores the link five years after British Airways axed its service.
Norwegian will also launch direct flights to Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale with all three routes served by ‘next generation’ B787 Dreamliners. A Dreamliner will also feature on British Airways’ new daily direct flights between Heathrow and Austin, Texas, which take flight in May. The state capital becomes
the third Texas
destination on British Airways’ summer schedule, joining Houston and Dallas. The airline will also increase flights to Seattle to 11 weekly (from 10). Meanwhile,
Etihad Airways, the
national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has announced direct flights to Los Angeles from June 1, 2014, subject to regulatory approvals. Together with flights to Chicago, New York and Washington DC Etihad will be operating 28 return flights weekly. Etihad Airways and American Airlines
have had an extensive code share agreement in place since September 2009. It places its EY code on American’s flights through its current gateways of Chicago, New York and Washington DC to more than 70 US cities.

Japan’s most luxurious train on track
SEVEN Stars, described as Japan’s first luxury sleeper train, takes to the tracks for the first time on October 15. Starting from Kyushu’s main city, Fukuoka, the train visits points of interest around the island, including Nagasaki, the hot spring spa town of Yufuin and the volcanic caldera of Mt. Aso, which featured in the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice.” The journey around the southern island is being called a ‘cruise train’ as, similar to on a cruise ship, passengers will disembark from the train for excursions along the train’s route. Food served on-board is
sourced
from the seven prefectures of Kyushu and the itinerary is designed so that passengers can
enjoy the unique
cuisines, onsen hot springs, nature and culture of each area passed through. Passengers can choose from a four- day/three-night train cruise, which includes one night off the train in a traditional Japanese ryokan inn, or a two-day/one-night train cruise. Prices start
