OFF TRACK
• university social challenge Victorian values
No cycle event is complete these days without an appearance from the National Cycle Museum and some of its historical exhibits. Last month the Museum was showing off truly vintage bikes at the Victorian Festival in Llandrindod Wells. A parade included some choice bikes
from yesteryear, including a Dursley
Pedersen, A Kangaroo, a Hobby Horse, a Duck, a Boneshaker , and a Peyton and Peyton. We’re happy to report the National Cycle Museum will be bringing along some bikes to our own BikeBiz Awards at the Hilton Metropole, NEC, Birmingham.

Gambling proceeds used to boost bikes
In what is turning out to be a bit of a Wales special (see above and below, right), this month’s Off Track also sees news of World Champion Triathlete Helen Jenkins. The Lottery Funded-champ visited young cyclists in Carmarthen, West Wales to see further Lottery funding in action at the Velodrome in Carmarthen Park, where youngsters from the Towy Riders Cycling Club were practising their cycle skills. In total, Sport in Wales has received over £179m of National Lottery Funding.

Hastings join liability call
Cycle Law Scotland’s ‘stricter liability’ campaign (or ‘presumed liability’) is continuing to pick up more supporters, snowball-style, now having enlisted former international rugby star Scott Hastings and his wife Jenny. The couple are keen cyclists and Jenny trained under the tutelage of the late Douglas Brown – a founder member of the Edinburgh Triathletes Club – who was tragically killed in a collision with a truck in July 2013. The Hastings have added their names to the petition working towards presenting a Members’ Bill this autumn, hoping to change the law to protect the most vulnerable road users. There’s more at

Humble prizes
Sustrans Connect2 has been honoured by the National Lottery Awards for its good work, not least for projects like the Pont y Werin (People’s Bridge) connecting Cardiff Bay with Penarth. The Lottery dispatched TV wildlife’s finest – one Kate Humble – to congratulate staff and supporters in person at the bridge in questions. The Humble-nator said: “Connect2 has enabled millions of people across the UK to make everyday journeys by foot or by bike, helping them to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys. I hope this award encourages people to get out and connect with our beautiful environment.”
