First Cycle to Work Day receives industry backing
Raleigh UK: ‘It’s a cause that we think is worth championing’ 25% show up to Nottingham HQ by bike By Jonathon Harker
RALEIGH, SILVERFISH, Halfords and Kiddimoto are just some of the bike trade names that got behind the inaugural Cycle to Work Day last month. National Cycle to Work Day aims to
encourage more people to tackle their daily commute by switching to pedal power for at least one day of the year. While naturally staff at bicycle companies are already enthusiastically geared up to ride to work, many industry companies went the extra mile to encourage wavering commuters to get onto two wheels. Many trade associations lent their
backing to the day too, including BikeRight, British Cycling, Sustrans, the Bicycle Association, CTC as well as a number of key bike brands. Raleigh partnered with Cycle to Work
Day instigator Cyclescheme to offer a Raleigh Revenui 2 road bike as a prize for pledging to ride to work. The company also offered free carb-heavy cakes and a healthy fruit option for everyone that rode to work on the day (Thursday September 12th). “We usually see 10 per cent of our
workforce coming in by bike but Raleigh staff have really got behind Cycle To Work Day and we’ve seen around 25 per cent of our workforce come in by bike today – that’s not bad when you consider that lots of our staff live over an hour away," said Ben Hillsdon, Raleigh marketing manager. “Events like today are important for the bike industry to get behind so we’re proud to be supporting the event.” Cornish distributor Silverfish also offered
up a free breakfast to those riding to work on Cycle to Work Day. Silverfish marketing manager Pete Drew commented: “We’re lucky to be based in a beautiful part of the country here in Cornwall, but the offer of a free breakfast definitely helped more people grab their

staff ride nearly 100 miles between them. MD Simon Booth was in in Paris getting ready for Salon Du Cycle; he cycled from the hotel to the exhibition. Free bike health checks were performed in advance of the day, with recommendations of work needed to get bikes ready for the commute. Chain stores got in on the Cycle to Work
Day action too. Halfords backed the day by also offering a bike free safety check at Bikehut stores, with free puncture kits and 20 per cent off selected cycle accessories thrown into the offer for customers.

The day was a significant opportunity to
convert more cycle commuters, according to Sustrans policy director Jason Torrance. He said: “[Cycle to Work Day] is a great opportunity for everyone to try cycling to work – it’s cheap, reliable, healthy and often the quickest way to get to work. “But many people who want to choose a
more active commute are put off by the lack of facilities and support available in their workplace. “Cycle parking and showers in an office should be as common as a printer and a coffee machine because employers who encourage cycling can increase profitability and staff productivity, as well as reducing absenteeism. “Making it safer, easier and more
enjoyable for people to get to work by bike would unlock huge economic and health benefits for the UK. It’s time to make sure all our workplaces are fit for cycling.” Sustrans is running a petition to make
Britain’s workplaces fit for cycling:
