CONFERENCE PREVIEW: AIPPI
It’s been another big year in the world of IP. From the continued implementation of
the unitary
patent (UP) to the launch of the new generic top-level domain (gTLD) programme, times are changing for brand owners and rights holders.
From September 5 to 11, around 700 practitioners and professionals from across the world will gather in Helsinki, Finland, for the AIPPI Forum & ExCo 2013 where the most prevalent issues will be discussed and debated.
Founded in 1897, AIPPI (the International Association for the Protection of IP) is the oldest global association for the protection of IP and is concerned with all types of rights including patents, trademarks, and copyright.
Tis year it will address contemporary issues across the board and pay particular focus to the world’s changing relationship with technology and what this means for rights holders.

It will provide lots of information and discussions on topical IP rights issues and trends in different parts of the world,” said Esa Korkeamäki, president of AIPPI Finland, which is hosting the conference for the first time since 1967.
Te grace period for patents, the implementation of the UP, data exclusivity and the continued disputes between Apple and Samsung are among the issues on the agenda during the six-day meeting.
With the development of technology a key feature of the conference, IP protection in the digital games market will be one of the first topics addressed.
will explain at a special forum dedicated to digital gaming on Friday, September 6.
“Businesses are moving to the cloud and new business models in gaming are rapidly changing the industry,” Korkeamäki said ahead of the conference.
Beem will focus on how games hosted on general purpose computers struggle to get patents on their products when compared to specialised computers.
“Patent protection would be eligible in the
context of a specialised computer such as an Xbox or PlayStation which has specific memory to manage high speed graphics and technology,” Beem told WIPR.
In many countries, digital games
are eligible for copyright protection. However, across Europe and the US protection in the form of a patent is much harder to obtain, as Richard Beem, founder of Beem Patent Law in Chicago,
“Similarly, a joystick controller for the purpose of making game playing fast and responsive and creating signals and a real life effect, would also be eligible. However, games that run on a general purpose computer, without specialist hardware,
