FROM THE EDITOR I
Showtime!
t’s showtime again! I’ll be spending August out of the sun’s rays at the shoe shows in London Olympia and Birmingham NEC, namely Pure and Moda, to bring you the latest trends. I’m also looking
forward to meeting up with members of the Footwear Today Best Sellers Panel and many old friends from the footwear industry. As well as previews of PURE, MODA and GDS, Dusseldorf, in this
issue we are featuring a review of Expo Riva Schuh, Riva Del Garda. Whilst, gleaning insight into what’s likely to be flying off your shelves next summer, you might care to check out our Editor’s Choice pages 26-27. We have selected a bevy of beautiful sandals and sling backs from Europe’s top manufacturers and those from further afield, for your lady customers in SS14. As we come to that time of year again the thoughts of many independent footwear retailers turn to profit margins. When they see the suppliers with the new season’s stock all they want to talk about is what margin can they achieve and can they get any discount. Margin is so important in any business and it is imperative to get the best deal possible, but it’s also so important not to give it away at the end of the season, says Misfit in ‘Turnover is vanity Profit is sanity’, on page 10 of this issue. Our mystery retailer suggests that one area that suppliers could
improve is by looking closely at the retail price point of a product and working the cost back from this rather than taking their base cost and adding the required margin to create the cost price. So often retailers look at shoes and think, we could get more for that especially when the retail is some stupid price point of £47 rather than the normal £49 or £55. This would allow the retailer to achieve a bit more margin and not cost the supplier a penny. Have you ever thought of designing and making your own shoes?
Now you can get a taste of the process of creating high fashion, fabulous footwear at De Montfort University, Leicester. Whether you already work in the footwear sector in merchandising, buying or sales – or would like to be a designer, this short course will be an inspiration”. Its renowned Footwear Design BA (Hons) degree has created graduates who have designed for the likes of Lady Gaga and Jimmy Choo and even the Duchess of Cambridge. This September, the university is running a four-day short course in Footwear Design. Sign up and you will get a glimpse of the solid, technical background which is necessary to produce wonderful shoes and let your creative imagination run riot! Find out all about it on page 28 of this issue. Don’t miss our popular Best Sellers and Retailer of the Month
sections. Independent footwear retailers who would like their shop profiled in Footwear Today Magazine, might be interested joining our Best Sellers panel? If so, I would be delighted to hear from you and tell you how you can participate and claim your free profile, my contact details are shown below. Do come along and meet the Footwear Today team at Moda, NEC
Birmingham, from August 11th to 13. Look out for Stand No S39. Kind regards,
