EXPO RIVA SCHUH REVIEW

A workshop full of ideas and exciting new trends for the market aylor

Expo Riva Schuh closed its 80th edition on June 18th with 10,850 visitors, an increase of +1.5% compared to June 2012. By Cheryl T

T

he 80th edition of Expo Riva Schuh at Riva Del Garda, Italy was an exciting event. It was my first visit to the four day show

and I really enjoyed talking to manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers from around the globe.

As it is the first event of the Spring/Summer

2014 season, 7-8 weeks before Moda, Expo Riva allows those who are sourcing footwear time to make a sample collection to sell on to their customers at the major European shoe events. It also provides an opportunity to get together with old friends and new from the footwear trade in a beautiful location, and to gather information about which styles are selling well in other countries.

During the two days I spent at the show, the

halls were filled with people from far all over the footwear world. It was interesting to note the strong presence from countries outside of Europe, and especially Canada, the United States, Japan China, Mexico and Chile, as well as the operators present from Kenya, South Africa and Egypt.

Thanks to its early position in the exhibition

calendar, the event provides an important opportunity for the footwear sector to meet and a privileged showroom for worldwide production. Huge volumes of shoes sold in Europe pass through Riva del Garda every year.

From this very international workshop, new

directions emerged regarding the trends for the 2014 Spring/Summer collections: for women, open-toed boots that wrap around the foot up to the ankle and hand-made thong sandals were much in evidence; for men classic British style shone through with a vintage look and shoes made of natural leather. Fluorescent colours were widely featured for children’s footwear styles.

Expo Riva Schuh celebrated its historic birthday

with 1,297 exhibitors (of whom 954 were from overseas) including numerous, young, new brands from emerging markets including India and the Far East: an amazing global project which succeeded in bringing all the stars of the international footwear market to this delightful Trentino town in Italy’s scenic Lake District.

The event has established its strategic position as the show from which the big distribution chains build their sample collections, as well as being a popular meeting point for retailers. Its beautiful location on the tranquil shores of Lake Garda is the icing on the cake!

The celebrations for the Expo Riva’s 80th

Edition scaled new heights with a musical extravaganza on the evening of June 15th in Riva Del Garda entitled “The Shoe Must Go On”, which told the story of the town’s association with the shoe, in praise of craftsmanship, followed by a champagne reception.

Then, on Sunday June 16th, Riva celebrated the

gastromic delights of the area in the form of a free wine tasting and canapes to musical accompaniment in some of the town’s bars on the edge of the lake. A truly memorable event!

I look forward to attending the next edition

of Expo Riva Schuh from January 11th to 14th 2014 and hope to meet some of our readers there.
