Kioti launches eight new tractor models

Site visit John Deere

Pro Landscaper visited one of the top 100 best global brands – John Deere – in Langar, Nottinghamshire, and met Chris Meacock, the new UK Division Sales Manager on the turf side of the business, who has been in the job barely two months.

John Deere products were

originally imported by a company in Kent back in the 1950s and the growth in the UK market meant John Deere saw an opportunity to expand the company into this country, but since 1966, the sales and marketing UK offi ce has been based at Langar. John Deere was originally registered as a limited company in 1952 north of the border, due to possibilities of opening a manufacturing plant in East Kilbride, which never materialised. In 1998 a new offi ce and training centre complex was built at Langar, and the original building was used to extend the parts warehouse. The UK does not manufacture any of the machines, and the head offi ce rarely

Chris Meacock, Division Sales Manager – Turf

sees the machines that are imported from the main European manufacturing plant in Mannheim, Germany, or any of the other 64 manufacturing plants around the world. The machines come into port and are sent straight to the dealers, however there are many demonstration models at the Langar offi ce. 46,900 spare parts are held on site – over £7million worth! From here, dealers from all over the country can have next day delivery, reducing the machines’ down time and cementing John Deere’s support to the end user. Even if the part requested is not

in stock, it can be shipped over from the main European parts warehouse in

Bruchsal, Germany, to local dealers by noon the following day.

There are a grand total of 110 employees of John Deere in the UK, with around 15 directly employed on the turf machines side of the business, the remainder work on the agriculture side. The turf side accounts for roughly 15 per cent of the UK’s total business. In 2011 John Deere celebrated 25 years of

turf business in the UK and 2012 saw the 175th anniversary of Deere & Co., making it one of the fi ve oldest industrial companies in the USA. At the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2013, John Deere celebrated 50 years of the worldwide turf business in the UK. There are in excess of 50 products that the landscape contractor would possibly use. John Deere manufactures machines from walk-behind or ride-on mowers, to compact tractors and Gator UTVs. The company globally produces over $36 billion in sales worldwide, of which over $3 billion is profi t. To help keep the company at the forefront of its chosen markets, they invest roughly 8.4 per cent back into research and development. In 1995, John Deere Credit Ltd formed,

which allowed the business to start offering fi nance on the purchase of John Deere machinery. This part of the business changed its name to John Deere Financial in 2011. Over the past 176 years, John Deere &

Co. has only had nine CEOs, of which the fi rst fi ve were all members of the Deere family. The core values of the company are integrity, quality, commitment and innovation. Pro Landscaper will be over in Berlin later this month for the John Deere new products launch event. Expect to see more on this in these pages shortly.
