Growing

Centenary Celebrations

Centrally located in the East Midlands, Coles Nurseries supply trees, shrubs, and plants both fi eld-grown and in containers, to the landscaping and amenity markets across the UK. The company currently has over 110 staff and 195 hectares of production facilities, and delivers across the UK in its own fl eet of vehicles. Plants are selected from own-grown stock and the majority of their container-grown plants are propagated in-house. In July, Coles Nurseries hosted their

Centenary Banquet at Beedles Lake Golf Centre at East Goscote. The venue overlooks a beautiful tree lined lake and on arrival guests enjoyed welcome drinks and canapés on the patio by the side of the lake. After a four course dinner, there were two special guest speakers; Dr Stephen Duckworth OBE, who gave a stirring speech on managing change, relating to Coles’ 100 year history and the current pressures on the industry. The second speaker, Mr Roy Lancaster OBE, best known for his work on the long running BBC TV programme, Gardeners' World and BBC Radio show Gardeners' Question Time and formerly the fi rst Curator of the Hillier Arboretum (now the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens) gave a fascinating talk, focusing on 10 different plants representing each of the 10 decades of Coles Nurseries, and the stories behind their discovery. James Coles closed the evening, giving a

talk enjoyed by all and fi nishing with the raffl e draw for a Lions Rugby Shirt, signed by Captain Finlay Calder and Dean Richards, both a part of the 1989 squad, donated by HSBC. All in all, the evening raised over £650 for Perennial (the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society), bringing the

total raised by Coles this year to over £1,200. Managing Director James Coles said, “We

would like to thank all our staff, speakers and guests for making the evening as enjoyable as it was, here’s to the next hundred years!” The centenary celebrations will continue with

an invitation only open day at their largest growing site, Gaddesby, in September. The open day will feature talks, seminars and tours of the nursery. For further details, Marketing Manager Harry Hitchcock can be contacted on 0116 241 2115.
