Water in British gardens is characterised by its resemblance to the “great grey-green greasy Limpopo River”. When you consider the effort people put into their lawns, you might think we could do better than this. Anne Wareham will consider some of the worst and best aspects of the use of water, and how we could do better.
• JAMES HEWETSON-BROWN – ESTABLISHING A WILDFLOWER MEADOW: SEED OR TURF? The seminar will highlight the benefi ts of a wildfl ower meadow, from biodiversity to creative design. It will look at the practicalities of how to establish a meadow, including experience from the company’s 2012 Olympic involvement. Also covered will be the pros and cons of turfi ng and seeding, including a cost analysis for both.

Karl Harrison will be sharing his passion for maximising the very best from your decking materials. Specialising in the design and construction, Karl has been evaluating the techniques required to transform standard decking materials into projects that stand out. This seminar will discuss how you can select the right materials and deliver a high end deck.

This seminar will cover the necessities and pitfalls of tree planting in a hard landscaped area, offering fi rst-hand, on-site experience from professionals in the area of urban planting.

• TIM O’HARE – THE USE AND SPECIFICATION OF GREEN COMPOST WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE INDUSTRY This seminar will cover the use of green compost specifi cally within the landscape industry and help to clarify the benefi ts and limitations of the material. What is green compost and why is it such a useful commodity to the landscape industry? Why is BSI PAS 100 Standard important, and how to use it. The use of green compost, using various case studies including the Olympic Park soils.
• JANINE PATTISON – CREATING SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPES – BUILDING THE FUTURE Janine will explore what sustainability means to us as landscape professionals, from the designers and landscapers, to building and maintenance contractors, those who build them and those who maintain them. Not forgetting of course all those who support us with plants, materials, machinery and services. Also covered will be ways to make existing gardens and landscapes more sustainable.
