Construction I work with a local team, Alfresco Landscape and Garden. They are my preferred landscapers as the owner, Paul Melvin, understands the way I think and I trust his ability to interpret and finish my projects to a very high standard. He is a Brett approved installer, and takes the responsibility for ordering materials. On arrival at the site, it had already been cleared and a sub base ready for the installation of the paving, however, there was a problem. The sub base consisted of scalpings only, it was not compacted and it had been laid right up to the level of the patio doors. This resulted in most of it being removed, a layer of stone dust compacted and a full bed of mortar laid. On removing the scalpings, we also found a large drain pipe perilously close to the surface. This was partly removed, and a very slim line drain installed for practical and aesthetic reasons.

Sourcing Materials The paving chosen was from Brett's Moderno range in grey and black. The clean sharp lines of the single size only (400mm x 400mm) paving was preferable to a random design, which would also echo the style in the kitchen floor. Silver gravel was used as mulch on the raised beds to help suppress weeds and retain moisture, and also to aid drainage at ground level. Garden lighting is appearing on more and more people's wish lists and for this particular project I needed a company with a good reputation and an eye for lighting design. I contacted Inspirational Lighting and Electrical supplies, who are located in Cardiff Bay. They worked alongside the landscapers, and were even commissioned to light the whole house as well! They advised lighting sources that were

whole project was controlled by Rako wireless lighting controls, which also controlled the water feature. Finally, I selected plants from my favourite
supplier, Pugh's Garden Centre in Radyr, Cardiff. I prefer to actually see the plants and I personally oversee selection. I use the garden centre as they only sell quality plants and if I'm not happy with the performance of a following installation, they are happy to provide a backup service to resolve any problems. Plants were chosen for their structure, form and evergreen qualities – Fatsia japonica, Phyllostachys nigra, selection of ferns, Heuchera 'Patty's Plum', topiary Photinia fraserii 'Red Robin', Livistona chinensis and a mature Olea Europa in keeping with the Mediterranean feel of the garden. The list wasn't exhaustive at this point because many plants weren't available in November/December. A re-visit will be necessary when the client is ready.
